The highlight of New Zealand s capital remains to the beautiful Wellington Harbour. The city offers a wealth of art and culture with a splash of bohemian in to the mix. The quality of restaurants, bars and cafes here is comparable to international standards, and serves up a good choice of cuisine for even the most discerning.
The lush greenery and stunning vistas in Wellington are so captivating that world famous movie director, Peter Jackson filmed the trilogy of Lord of the Rings here. A popular tourist activity includes a tour of the site where the film was located. Other popular attractions in Wellington include the Museum of New Zealand where the fascinating history and culture of the nation can be viewed in sequence, the Wellington Zoo, the nature reserve Zealandia, Wellington Botanical Garden, a ride on the Wellington Cable Car and the New Zealand Portrait Gallery.
Having a meal along one of the waterfront cafe and restaurants is a wonderful experience to partake in. With the glimmering surface of the water in sight, and a perfectly chilled white wine at hand and some fresh seafood, are all the makings of a perfect day out. A cruise on the waters of the Wellington Harbour is yet another exciting thing to do while in the city. A ferry service runs at regular intervals, and also visits other neighbouring islands such as Days Bay, Maitu Somes Island, Queens Wharf, Seatoun and Petone. You may hop off at any of the islands and roam the area to hop back on board again later on in the day.
A walking, cycling and jogging track by the name of Great Harbour Way lines the coast of the harbour and provides magnificent views. If one were to walk the entire stretch it would take you anything between 3 to 5 days, so be rest assured there is plenty of area to cover.
