This past November, you could feel as though you were having intimate conversations with sports stars, as Twitter users from the sports world spoke candidly and openly to other users. Tweeting was enjoyable for sports fans and athletes, as well as everyday Twitter residents. Their communication made the Guangzhou Games the most interfaced of recent Asiads.
When a veteran of the basketball team from China led his team to the very top of the podium, many thousands of fans in China had already been told how the victory would be celebrated by the players. Fans will not see Zhi again, since this was his last time participating in the Asian games. The fans online wanted to hang gold medals around his neck, as the other team players actually did, to let him know that they would remember him fondly.
So there was Wang Zhihi on the highest podium, wearing twelve gold medals around his neck. His eyes sparkled with tears, as his younger team-mates bowed in front of him, and the capacity crowd went wild with applause.
Hangzhou Elf responded to the uplifting moment by telling Big Zhi that he was the best, and that their win had not been easy, but they made it together, by playing as a team. He thanked all the fans for their support.
Sports stars can let their feelings out a bit on social networking sites, using them as a microblog, and a place where the fans could stand with them and experience the events through them. It is more interactive than just watching them on TV.
Hundreds of athletes from China opened their own microblogs so that they could keep their fans up to date. This included players from badminton, table tennis and swimming. The former world and Olympic champion Liu Xiang found that his followers rose to 7.3 million people after his performance in the meet’s 110 meter hurdles. He posted a photo of himself in his military uniform after the competition was completed. That photo alone generated almost 5,000 comments, ranging from how good looking he is to how adorable he appears in the photo.
Not every athlete enjoyed the intimacy of speaking with fans on their microblogs, which still became the most fashionable and popular way to post about various topics. These ranged from the theme of the national sport system to what the athletes are doing when they are posting. Wang Dalei was a goalkeeper who suffered an embarrassing loss, and he spoke abusively on his microblog after the loss.
